  1. Short-term local anaesthetic injected into
  2. tissues or applied to skin. It is effective
  3. for brief, invasive procedures such as dental
  4. care or insertion of a cannula (small tube)
  5. into a vein. Temporary paralysis (to prevent
  6. involuntary movement during eye surgery, for
  7. example) can be achieved by injection
  8. directly into the nerve serving the region.
  9. Rapidly absorbed by mucous membranes (lining
  10. tissues), lignocaine may be sprayed into the
  11. nose or throat to allow comfortable insertion
  12. of a viewing instrument during endoscopy. Its
  13. action makes it a potent anti-arrhythmia drug
  14. as well: given intravenously during or
  15. following a heart attack, it reduces the risk
  16. of irregular contractions of the ventricles.
